Silver wedding anniversary: what 25 years means and how to mark it

9 min read

The 25th wedding anniversary is the silver anniversary, and every list agrees on it: silver on the traditional and the modern list alike, in Britain, Ireland, the US, Canada and Australia. For many couples it is the first anniversary since the wedding that is celebrated with guests, though whether to celebrate at all is the couple's decision.

Twenty-five years turn a promise into a shared history: moves, jobs, often children, and usually a few stretches that had to be got through together. The silver anniversary is often the first time family and friends mark that out loud, and the first time in years that many of the original wedding guests sit at the same table again.

This guide covers what the name means, ways of celebrating that work, official congratulations by country, seven wishes to adapt, gifts by budget, a sample invitation and the cases that do not fit the usual picture. The names of every other year are in the list of wedding anniversary names by year.

1. What the silver anniversary means

The 25th anniversary is silver on every list in use: the traditional British list, the traditional American list and the modern American one. Emily Post already named it in her 1922 book Etiquette, long before an American jewellers association filled in most of the other years in 1937, and the English phrase silver wedding, borrowed from the German Silberhochzeit, is recorded from the 1840s. In Britain people tend to say silver wedding; in the US, silver anniversary or simply 25th anniversary is more usual.

The image fits. Silver is precious but made to be used: cutlery, candlesticks, frames. It tarnishes because it reacts with traces of sulfur compounds in the air and forms a dark film of silver sulfide, and it comes back bright as soon as someone polishes it. A marriage after twenty-five years is much the same: valuable, used daily, and shining because of care. Gold, which does not tarnish, only follows at fifty.

Couples who married in 2001 reach their silver anniversary in 2026. It often falls in a period of change, with children leaving home and parents getting older, so the day can feel less like looking back than like taking stock.

Official congratulations at twenty-five depend on the country. In Canada, the Prime Minister sends a certificate for the 25th and every five years after, on request at least six weeks ahead and to Canadian citizens only; British Columbia's Premier also starts at 25. In the US, the White House greetings form listed the 25th among its anniversary options in September 2026, although many congressional offices still describe the service as starting at fifty. In the UK the King's messages begin at sixty, in Australia official messages at fifty. Catholic couples anywhere can request a papal blessing parchment for the 25th from the Vatican's Office of Papal Charities.

Silver does not shine because it was never used; it shines because someone kept polishing it.

2. Celebrating: from a party to an evening for two

Nobody has to celebrate, and no format is more correct than another. Four shapes cover most silver anniversaries, and they differ mainly in the effort involved:

FormatGuestsLead timeWorks when
Party at a venue or restaurant40 to 1004 to 6 monthsthe original wedding guests should come together again
Dinner with family and closest friends10 to 256 to 8 weeksthe evening should be conversation rather than programme
Party at home or in the garden20 to 502 to 3 monthsthere is space and friends are willing to help
A trip for twononedepends on the destinationthe couple would rather have time than an audience

Unlike a golden wedding, a silver anniversary is usually still hosted by the couple themselves. If children or friends want to help, hand out tasks rather than responsibility: photographs, music, a speech. The speech follows wedding rules: short, specific, one story rather than a list. How to write a wedding speech covers the structure, and it carries over unchanged.

What makes an evening like this is repetition: the song from the first dance, a wedding photograph on every table, the same cake flavour as on the day, the best man or maid of honour giving a speech again twenty-five years on. Some couples add a religious moment: the Church of England's thanksgiving for marriage is often used on significant anniversaries and can include blessing the rings, and many US Catholic dioceses hold an annual anniversary Mass for couples marking their 25th, 40th, 50th and later years, booked through the parish. Couples who want to speak their promises again will find the practical side in renewing your wedding vows.

3. Seven silver anniversary wishes for different relationships

A good silver anniversary message is short, mentions the twenty-five years and has one sentence only the sender could write. Swap names and details for your own:

  • From the children: "Twenty-five years, two people and one home we can always come back to. Thank you for showing us how to stay together, including on the days when it wasn't easy. Happy silver anniversary, with all our love."
  • From close friends: "When you two got married, twenty-five years sounded like forever. It turns out they go quickly when you spend them with the right people. Here's to the next twenty-five, and yes, we're coming to that party too."
  • From a brother or sister: "Tom, I've known you longer than Anna has, but I know her well enough by now to say it: you two are better together than either of you is alone. Congratulations on twenty-five years."
  • From the neighbours: "Dear Susan and Mark, for years we've seen you out in the garden together every Saturday, and we can't think of a better advert for marriage. Congratulations on your silver anniversary, and here's to many more years next door."
  • From colleagues: "Dear Sarah, the whole team sends congratulations on your silver anniversary. We hope the day has nothing whatsoever to do with work, and that the next quarter-century is as good as the first."
  • To your partner: "Twenty-five years, and I'd still say yes. Faster this time. Thank you for every day, the rainy ones included."
  • Short, for a card: "Silver suits you both. Happy 25th anniversary!"

More options, sorted by closeness and tone, are collected in the silver anniversary wishes. How a card is built, from greeting to personal line to sign-off, is explained in what to write in a wedding card; an anniversary card follows the same pattern.

4. Gifts by budget, and what to look for in silver

A silver gift is the obvious choice but not a rule. After twenty-five years most households are fully equipped, so the presents that land best make memories visible or give time together. Three tiers as a guide; the amounts are rough ranges:

  • Under about $40 or £30: a silver or silver-plated frame with the original wedding photograph, a jar of twenty-five handwritten memories collected from friends, a silver polishing cloth with a card that makes the obvious joke.
  • About $40 to $150, or £30 to £120: a sterling silver cake server or spoon engraved with the wedding date, a reprint of a newspaper from the wedding day, a photo book with one picture from each of the twenty-five years, dinner at the place where the reception was held.
  • Above that, or as a group gift: a contribution to a second honeymoon, a weekend back where they spent the first one, silver jewellery for both, or one joint present from all the guests instead of a table full of small parcels.

With silver itself, the mark matters. Sterling silver is an alloy of 92.5 per cent silver, usually with copper, which is why it carries the number 925. In the UK, an article of silver weighing more than 7.78 grams has to be hallmarked before a trader may describe it as silver, so an unmarked "silver" tray in a shop is a warning sign. In the US, the Federal Trade Commission's jewelry guides allow the words sterling and sterling silver only for items that are at least 925 parts per thousand silver. Silver plate is a thin layer over another metal and can wear through; both are fine, as long as you know which you are paying for. Because silver tarnishes, a polishing cloth belongs with any silver gift, and perhaps a line in the card saying the same goes for marriages.

Cash is less usual than at a wedding, since nobody is setting up a home any more; many families pool what they would have spent into one shared present.

And between the two of you? Nothing is expected. Popular choices stress the time together rather than the object: a slim band or an eternity ring worn next to the wedding ring, a trip with no reason except the anniversary, or a letter that sums up twenty-five years on a single page.

5. Invitation wording and the less usual cases

A silver anniversary invitation needs the same details as any other: who is hosting, what for, when and where, a reply-by date, and whether presents are expected. An example for a party with family and friends:

"Twenty-five years ago we said yes, and we would say it again today. We would love to celebrate with you on Saturday 13 June from 6 pm at The Old Mill. Please let us know by 15 May whether you can make it. We don't need any presents; if you would like to bring something, bring a photo from the last twenty-five years."

Some situations do not fit the usual picture and deserve a thought of their own:

  • The couple doesn't want to celebrate. That is a complete answer. If you still want to do something, send a card or a small present and leave out the surprise party.
  • The children plan a surprise. Kindly meant, but not every couple wants guests that day; checking with one of the two first avoids an awkward scene at the door.
  • Together long before the wedding. A couple who lived together for ten years before marrying still reaches the silver anniversary twenty-five years after the wedding. Nothing stops them celebrating "twenty-five years of us" earlier, if that is the more honest number.
  • A second marriage or a blended family. Children from earlier relationships may feel differently about the day. A small, inclusive format and a speech that names everyone usually work better than a re-run of the wedding.
  • A hard year. If the anniversary falls during an illness, a crisis or a bereavement, a quiet day is more fitting than a party. The celebration can wait; twenty-six years are worth just as much.

The silver anniversary marks twenty-five years of marriage, and the name fits: silver is valuable, gets used and shines because someone looks after it. How to mark it, with a party, a dinner, a trip or not at all, is the couple's decision. Guests rarely go wrong with a personal line in the card and a present that gives memories or time. Fifteen years later comes the ruby anniversary, and at fifty the golden wedding anniversary.
