The tin anniversary: why ten years of marriage are marked with a soft metal

The tin anniversary: why ten years of marriage are marked with a soft metal

8 min read

The 10th wedding anniversary is the tin anniversary: British lists say tin, American lists tin or aluminium, and the American modern list jumps to diamond jewellery. Tin bends without breaking and keeps what it holds safe. As the first round number, ten is often celebrated more deliberately than the years before, usually in the middle of busy family life.

Ten is the first anniversary with a zero, and it shows. For many couples it is the first time since the wedding that they celebrate on purpose: with guests, with a trip or with a new promise. It also lands in a crowded stretch of life, with children at school, careers at full speed and little time for two.

This article sorts out the three names for the year, explains what tin is supposed to mean, suggests celebrations from family day to weekend away, and offers gifts by budget, original wishes and the awkward cases. The full sequence is in the list of wedding anniversary names by year.

1. Tin, aluminium or diamonds: three answers for one year

Ten is the anniversary where the lists part company. The traditional British list gives tin. The traditional American list gives tin or aluminum, as it is spelled there. The American modern list, a twentieth-century creation of the jewellery trade, skips base metals entirely and suggests diamond jewellery. Flower lists add the daffodil. Wherever you live, you will meet all three in shops and online guides, and any of them is defensible.

Why tin? The common reading points to two properties. Tin is soft and pliable, yet it resists corrosion, which is why it has long been used to coat iron and steel and to keep food in tins fresh. Applied to a marriage: ten years have shown that you can bend without breaking, and that you know how to protect what matters. Like every name on the list, this is an interpretation that grew up around a commercial table, not an ancient rite. Aluminium, the American addition, carries the same idea in a lighter, more modern metal.

If you have family in continental Europe, expect different answers. German-speaking countries call the tenth the Rosenhochzeit, the rose wedding, which is why a German relative may turn up with roses. Dutch lists offer crystal, steel, tin or rose. Worth knowing when the cards start arriving.

Ten years teach you that the strongest things are the ones that can bend.

2. Celebrating ten years: from family day to weekend away

At ten years, many couples have children at primary or elementary school: old enough to join in, and old enough to spend a weekend with their grandparents. That gives four formats that combine well:

  1. A weekend for two. For many the most important part: two nights without children, perhaps in the city of the honeymoon or the hotel of the wedding night. Arrange the childcare first and book second; popular weekends need two to three months’ notice.
  2. A party with the original guests. Inviting the wedding guests again shows how much ten years have changed. A garden party or dinner in a small room is enough; the wedding photos on the wall do most of the decorating.
  3. A family day. A day out, a picnic, and in the evening the wedding photos on the sofa, when the children look closely for the first time at how their parents looked back then.
  4. The re-take. The whole family goes back to the church, the courthouse, the registry office or the beach where you married and recreates one of the wedding photos in the same spot, this time with the children in the frame. Framed next to the original, it costs nothing and survives every house move.

Some couples use the tenth to renew their vows, alone or in front of friends; the guide to renewing your wedding vows covers how that works in practice. Children who were not born at the wedding can take a role this time, as flower girl, page boy or ring bearer.

On budget, the same rule applies as every year: agree a ceiling first, so that one of you is not planning a weekend in Rome while the other is planning a bunch of flowers.

3. Tin and aluminium gifts that are not a joke

The words sound unpromising, but a few facts make the choice easier. Pewter is an alloy that is mostly tin, typically 85 to 99 per cent, and most modern pewter is made without lead, so an engraved pewter piece is a genuine tin gift. Much of what is sold as “tin”, including most food tins, is really tinplate: steel with a thin tin coating. And a tintype photograph, despite its name, is made on thin iron rather than tin. Studios that still make them are a lovely idea as long as nobody checks the chemistry.

Prices are rough ranges. Flowers work too: flower lists give the daffodil for ten, which blooms in spring whichever hemisphere you live in; out of season, a pot of bulbs to plant together will flower next year. If you prefer roses, as the German list suggests, one detail matters: in Russia, even numbers of flowers are for funerals, so for family from there make it eleven stems, ten for the years behind you and one for the next. The guide to wedding flower meanings has more on what each bloom says.

If you filled a wooden time capsule at the wood anniversary, this is the year to open it. Start a tin one for year twenty.

4. Wishes for a tin anniversary

The lines below are original suggestions to copy or adapt:

  • To your partner: “Ten years, and I would ask you again today. Only faster.”
  • From friends: “Ten years, a full house and still that look when you catch each other’s eye. Here’s to the next ten.”
  • Short: “A decade down, tin-tough and still shining. Happy anniversary!”
  • Playful: “Ten years of marriage, and the great dishwasher debate is still undecided. Happy tin anniversary, you two.”
  • From parents: “Ten years ago we wished you luck. Today we can see that you built most of it yourselves.”
  • Formal: “Warm congratulations on your tenth wedding anniversary, with every good wish for the decade ahead.”
  • From the children: “For Mum and Dad: ten notes in a tin, because you have been married ten years, and one extra from us.”

For more, see the collection of anniversary wishes. If you write your own, tin gives you durability, a metal that bends rather than snaps, and things kept safe. “Tin-pot” and “tin ear” are best left out.

5. Special cases: two opinions, a hard patch, bad timing

  • One wants a party, the other does not. Common at the first round number. A compromise that often holds: a small party for the guests, plus a weekend for two that belongs entirely to the other person.
  • A difficult phase. Then the tin anniversary does not have to prove anything. Some couples use the day for an honest conversation instead of a celebration; the deep questions for couples give it a structure. Guests should go easy on jokes about bending and breaking.
  • Winter or the summer holidays. The day can move. A weekend before or after counts just as much.
  • Second marriage, blended family. You count from this wedding. Children from earlier relationships can put their own note in the tin, if they want to.
  • A loss in the past year. If a parent or a member of the wedding party has died, the day can be quieter. A flower for the person who is missing often fits better than a party.
  • Forgotten. More awkward at ten than in other years, but repairable: celebrate late, without excuses.

Two and a half years later comes a milestone with no English name at all, twelve and a half years of marriage, which German and Dutch families do mark.

The tenth wedding anniversary is tin on the British list, tin or aluminium on the American one, and diamond jewellery on the American modern list. Tin stands for a marriage that bends without breaking and keeps what matters safe. As the first round number, ten is often marked with a weekend for two, a party with the wedding guests or a family day. A tin of ten notes costs almost nothing and is remembered longest. The first step: sort out the childcare, then book.
